ABOUT

About the Wayside Chapel:

The Wayside Chapel was founded in 1964 and has married celebrities such as Jane Powell, Andy Gibb, Kerri Anne Kennerley, and Jonathan Coleman as well as many of the street people’ who they help and thousands of other Australians. It remains a unique and radical organization with celebrity ambassadors (David Wenham, Dick Smith, Leah Purcell, Teddy Tahu Rhodes, and Ernie Dingo among them), a continuing outreach to the destitute and disadvantaged of the Kings Cross area, and a unique cultural legacy as both a religious and political agent for social change.

About Wayside Bride:

Wayside Bride is an oral history project to gather stories from people who have been married at the Wayside Chapel over the five decades of its history. The stories will be gathered both through this website and also through face to face interviews with people who have been married at Wayside. The idea is that eventually some of these stories will be collated into a stage play to be performed at the Griffin Theatre in Kings Cross though, of course, not all stories will be included in the play since there is likely to be a larger number than can be performed. All stories will be archived on this website.

About the Playwright:

Alana Valentine is a multi-award-winning Australian playwright whose works include Run Rabbit Run, Parramatta Girls, Head Full of Love and Ladies Day. Her stunning new work Letters to Lindy explores the public’s relationship with one of 20th Century Australia’s most iconic figures, Lindy Chamberlain.
